I don't think he even has to. Both Nail and Veda know full well none of the kids want to be a part of this project, and would gladly run away given the chance. Its the reason they preferred Malhart alive, so he could be used as leverage against them.

I don't really see what he'll get out of this discussion with Nail, but it'll probably make more sense next page.
