Nah, can't be acid, @Tom. Acid would eat through metal very easily. Also, fumes from the reactions would be very bad (not just smelly but also very hot and possibly explosive).

If it was boiling, Tobi would have felt it and withdrawn her foot earlier, ergo, she wouldn't have had to ask. Acids make more sense, that's how the water looks so clear, it dissolves all the particulates.
