Honestly the only think confusing is the scale. You dont need this sort of setup to examine this sort of human dynamic.

I agree, that's why I find the whole "what is the point of the game" question interesting.
You don't need to go through all this to test human dynamics. (not to mention, that doesn't account for the whole "needs at least one magic user" thing.)
I don't really think we've been given enough clues to start determining the answer, though.
