Another possibility is that it's a split-screen puzzle; two paths, but each has obstacles that can only be bypassed via controls on the other path, and they meet up again later. That way if the party kills off enough members for all the survivors to take the path that looks easy, they'll reach the first such obstacle and just be trapped with no going back. Like a pitcher plant, but for parties that don't trust each other.
