I think that's the one in Gulliver's Travels, where you can be violently killed while you're healthy, but if you allow yourself to age to the point where you become decrepit, suddenly you can't die anymore and you're forced to live forever as a half-dead senile person.

@?: Veda has no magic, according to the empire's magic test. She seems to have SOME ability, but it's probably not magic in the traditional sense, and she probably wouldn't need Noah if she could use spirit sight herself.
