I'm expecting the Hallowman to appear as a small, frail old man, if Persephone is warning them not to underestimate it. Something completely harmless-looking.
Also, I would not turn my body into stairs, I would turn it into an elevator. Much more compact, and easier on the knees.

They should also be worried about encountering Veda, since she was the very first thing the nightmares targeted despite having several powerful magic users surrounding her and allegedly not having magic.
... We have not seen the lower half of the mysterious figure in the chapter titles. If the Hallowman is related to Veda in some way and/or she is the mentioned "nightmare indistinguishable from a normal human" then yeah, they're boned.
