Selling them on the fashion.

Not gonna lie: Natatsha (love that name btw) presents a very compelling argument. I mean, if they can live reasonably comfortable lives, then living as a fugitive opposing the empire isn't really any better or worse than living as a contributing member of society within it... Only problem is that whole issue about the empire potentially going after your friends and family if you defect... not that I believe contributing members of society are extempt from that kinda sh*t, but still...

Well, my test of intentions of both Malhart team and the Empire would be simple: who can give me more free ice cream is the best.

I like that she is trying, but a cross-hatched tan jacket isn't exactly... well... maybe being a fugitive leaves you slightly isolated from society...
@Saiko Barring some sort of icecream-based magic, I am confident that The Empire "can" give you *far* more. That doesn't mean that they "will"...

Yeah, but they've probably got tracking chips in their clothes or something. That's what I'd do, if I was running this thing.

I guess it depends on your personality, which kind of life one prefers. But of course both variants are not the best options...

An important question here is what happens when Malhart dies? He's been an enemy of the empire for a while so I'm picturing an old man (not sure if we've ever seen him). If hes shielding them that could be trouble long term.

Well, i think its pretty clear the empire is a MASSIVE group of jerks. So if there were any degree of free choice then i dont think anyone would work for them. Compared to say move to Heroland.
I mean, child soldiers. Nuff said.
Problem is of course that the empire is such massive jerks, that defecting could lead to mass excecutions.
Meanwhile i think Malhart dying is less of a worry. He has been doing this for 30 years? That plenty of time to train a replacement team up.

The problem is that a replacement is not just a matter of training, but also ability. He may well have trained a group of skilled caretakers, but if they don't have the ability to diffuse magic signatures over a large area then they are subject to whatever wizard-detectors The Empire gives to its death-squads...

Lack of ability is thankfully not a problem either. Since we have been told free magic users can basically learn to do anything.
