So ...

Delaying the inevitable.

38056: Sloss - Monday, July 24 2023 - 1:19 AM

Morty, don't worsen your situation

38057: 4 - Monday, July 24 2023 - 1:32 AM

Is that really a good idea to tease Burk with a sound attack that is absolutely not powerful enough to get rid of him before a retaliating punch reaches someone's face?

38058: Tom - Sunday, July 23 2023 - 6:35 PM

Lucky dude.

How many more wails can Burk take?

38059: Chameon - Sunday, July 23 2023 - 6:57 PM

Welp, doing that attack was suicide

38060: noname - Monday, July 24 2023 - 2:53 AM

Do note, Morty: "Still"; it's just a matter of time before you CAN'T use it any longer.

38061: Agent_Cook - Monday, July 24 2023 - 3:01 AM

Never thought stubborness could be a sin.
Until today

38062: Kaleb - Monday, July 24 2023 - 4:38 AM

I’m honnestly surprised that even made Burk wince. Defeinitely wasn’t a good idea to use, but Burk reacted more than I expected.

38063: -F- - Monday, July 24 2023 - 4:46 AM

Watch out Burk's about to snap you out of existence!

38064: Brilliand - Monday, July 24 2023 - 7:47 AM

@Tom I think those wails are too weak to ever *actually* kill him. If he takes thousands of them, he might have a shot at gaining more Esper powers due to the trauma.

38065: anon - Monday, July 24 2023 - 3:19 AM

Well, he's dead anyway. He might as well go down fighting, even if we'd prefer he didn't.

@Brilliand I don't think that's how people get esper powers, is it?

38066: Melany - Monday, July 24 2023 - 11:05 AM

@Kaleb

I'm surprised Burk is still standing! High intensity ultra-sound can cause nasty internal damage, and Burk is freaking bleeding from his mouth every time he gets tagged by that. Any normal person would be long dead at this point.

We all know he will be fine because this is a Burk story, but characters don't exactly know that. With information Morty actually has available, continuing attacking is a perfectly reasonable course of action. Especially since Burk made it pretty clear he isn't going to just let him go.

38067: Brilliand - Monday, July 24 2023 - 12:30 PM

@anon Yes, there was a Patreon post a while back that specified that esper powers result from "enduring magic-induced trauma".

...and someone who is already an esper can become a more powerful esper in the same way.

38068: Paintr - Monday, July 24 2023 - 1:32 PM

Burk has cat being sprayed with water bottle energy in that last panel.
Hope that attack drops off rapidly with range.

38069: Xyxzz - Monday, July 24 2023 - 2:23 PM

@anon We know it has something to do with black crystal exposure and the typical result is essentially rapid onset of heavy metal poisoning. We also know the experiments to find out more were widely considered extremely unethical. Tobi 2152 is the most direct reference.

Burk has been obliquely related to those experiments in some foreshadowing, but its entirely possible he was simply a miner and his physical build and charming insanity are simply side effects and/or a ptsd coping mechanism of that experience. Evelyn was almost certainly a miner, given the jars of ashes and missing arm.

38070: Melany - Monday, July 24 2023 - 3:55 PM

Esper powers are gained as a result of suffering "magic-based trauma". Black crystal doesn't have to be involved - it is said that all survivors of a black crystal mine are uniquely guaranteed to gain esper powers, but not every esper that exists is a survivor of a black crystal mine.

I've always thought that "magic-based trauma" meant mental trauma from magic-related incidents, but technically having your innards being repeatedly blasted by magic does, strictly speaking, count as magic-based trauma.

Then again, I don't think Burk is being blasted by magic, or he'd be able to counter it. The magic is what makes the sound move, but the sound itself is mundane. So it probably doesn't count, no.
