I don't think I've heard you express any form of enjoyment out of HoH in well over a year, possibly more, so I'm a bit puzzled as to what you're getting out of it.

I think the story I'm telling might simply not be a fit for your personal taste.

Nah, Z2 has been a reader for a long time, on some older pages you can find a lot of more neutral/positive comments by him(?).

I honestly am pretty happy with the comic, myself. It's one of only two webcomics I still follow.

If Burk was just an "invincible winner", he'd be lame, but I think he works because we're all wondering what's beneath the mask; there's been enough of a tell that he's not actually invincible, but -how- he's cheating the system remains a delightful mystery. And: why. (Which may be subversively forthright; he probably hasn't lied about it; the character seems to enjoy being coy without actually lying, giving little hints and pieces for us to put together). Like, there's a backstory there, and it seems like it'll actually be good.

In some ways, we're all Nightshade, wondering "yo, what IS this guy's deal, though, for real?"

Is it time? Will the Burking of Vonnesparda finally commence?

Though, I suppose we did see plenty of people Burked in this chain of events. Heroes and Morty mostly.

(That also doesn't mean he is not an esper, but it is still unknown)

@dorf If the eye sparkle actually means something, that'll be huge. I'm sure we've seen more than just Burk (and now Vonesperda) do it, though Burk definitely does it most.

While normally I avoid taking a stance in such matter, I have to agree with Z2 on this issue. I also (believe to) understand the root of his frustration with Burk in particular.

The problem stems from his way of violating the rules of the world to such an insane degree. Magic is supposed to be a reality altering force, jet a completely nomal unsupported person can defeat its users with ease. Instead of making Burk look powerfull, everyone else simply comes across incompetent or stupid. This is made worse by basically only effecting suppossed "Pro Heroes" who in reality act like complete amateurs with no genuine battle experience.

Irronically the other story arcs are exempt from this, because most characters here are actually beginners, amateurs or normal untrained civilians.

In summary I definitely like the comic as a whole, but utterly despise Burk from a narrative standpoint (and am not realy fond of his behavior either).

Thought: The way mini-Burks talk to Burk about having his back on pg.3156 implies they are the reason Burk could fight Vonney, i.e. they specifically is what enables Burk to punch spirits. Curious, that.

As IF Burk would rely on something so paltry as magical items in order to Burk! The affront! The cheek to suggest such a thing! He clearly runs on 100% all-natural Burkin' power.*

I'm not sure what about Burk makes him look "normal" or "unsupported". The exact nature of his powers are a mystery, yes, but him having power was obvious for thousands of pages.

Also, pretty sure heroes were never supposed to be competent. Heroland has well established itself as a disorganised, corrupt clustermess well before Burk started beating up heroes left and right.

In addition: one thing that's easy to forget is that none of the heroes in Eddstart are supposed to be particularly powerful. All of them are gold-stars, and from Nightshade's explanation (pg. 1376) the top doesn't consider them terribly important. The real power behind Heroland was implied to be in the white-star heroes, of which we've seen precisely zero. (Is Logan a white-star? I don't actually know).
