You know, I didn't really Evyle to suddenly be revealed to actually be a (mostly) good guy (I assume that's what's been happening, anyway) but I am here for it. She is actually very cool.

Oh wow, she actually didn't know.

To save everyone some time searching: the "what happened previously" is on page 2641
36815: TheMegax - Monday, May 15 2023 - 5:35 AM
I wouldn't say she's "good", more like she isn't a backstabber who would betray the executives. I see her more akin to a facestabber.
But it seems like her goals align with Pablo's so... pragmatic villain time!

Evyle might be an awful person, but at least she's got principles it seems
After all, this is all bad news for her business

Looking back at page 2626, Evyle was aware that the contracts said not to come near her. And I'm pretty sure she wrote all the non-invisible-ink parts of the contract, including a line about losing your powers. (Otherwise, why would the heroes have commented that they thought that was fluff?)
But on page 2319, Icy Queen quotes the invisible-ink part of the contract: "Don't come near Mastermind. Don't come near anyone who works for Mastermind. And above all else, DO NOT DISOBEY ME. Break any of these rules and you'll spend the rest of your days as a pathetic, powerless and regular human."
Presumably that entire section was written by Morty. Question is, does "me" refer to Evyle (because the top of the contract probably credits her as the author), or does it refer to Morty (because he actually wrote that line)?

I reread some strips and something stood out to me:
https://neorice.com/hoh_burk_2441
says that signing the contract should evoke visual imagery and voices when binding the signer.
https://neorice.com/hoh_burk_2319
shows this imagery in the bottom panel, I assume.
But
https://neorice.com/hoh_burk_2604
shows that Barry and Passion never received this imagery when they signed them. Does it mean they were never bound by it?

@<o,o>
Last panel of 2319 is her loosing her power when she broke the hidden clause, not signing the contract. She said she lost her power in 2316 and explained in following strips.

@Potatopeelerkind - I think the person who changed her name to "Evyle" would object to being called a good person. She's definitely not. She just keeps her business above board, since she doesn't want any legal trouble. Something as shady as these contracts just reeks of criminal intent, and the fact that it's in service to a spirit would only set her further against it.

Oh I think Evyle would absolutely backstab the executives. She said it herself - she "gives people the respect they deserve", "undermines the people paying her", and "thrives off hate and resentment". She is absolutely evil.
She's just not, like, cartoonish megalomaniac "undermine an entire country" evil. She is pragmatic evil. Her methods are pretty underhanded, but seems she sees benefit to running her business technically legitimately. Think "mafia boss" evil vs "comic book supervillain" evil.
@<o,o>
I wonder if Barry and Passion's contracts were signed before the whole modification scheme began. Over the top dramatic imagery seems right up Vonney's alley, but they do mention "an empty threat" about losing powers, which seems more like Evyle's pragmatic style.

Unfortunately it's been waaaaaay too long since we touched base with Burk's arc, so it's hard for me to keep track of the plot details.
That said, given the other comments, I seem to be in the minority, thankfully.

@Potatopeelerkind: Evyle is more "goth evil" than "actual evil", but she's still a massive jerk, so rather a jump to say she's actually good.
@player_03: Pretty sure "And above all else, DO NOT DISOBEY ME." is the only stuff that was invisible ink.
36825: Paintr - Monday, May 15 2023 - 12:23 PM
I wonder if you have to understand what you're agreeing to at least on some level for the contract to work. Maybe you're too dumb or reckless to even understand the words you're reading it doesn't work?
36828: noname - Monday, May 15 2023 - 8:47 PM
Evyle is evil, but she's not capitalism!evil: Money may be a good indicator of how successful her business is, but she's got no attachment to the money itself, greed is not what motivates her, nor is raking in cash her ultimate goal with what she's doing, and she definitely won't stand for greater evils tarnishing her business' legitimacy for their own personal profit behind her back.
A day full of surprises for Evyle
I knew it! Evyle was way to cute to be guilty.
