To be fair, Alphonse WAS trying to go down the route of bribery, corruption, possibly blackmail, and attempting learning very classified, very secret, and very dangerous information. If this Ex-Purple Knight really is a man of integrity who merely had a bit of a slip-up, then him offering to pretend that he didn't hear what Alphonse just said is a very generous offer.
