I wonder if Burk was weakened by signing that contract? And maybe that contract wasn't with the rest, as that parasitic spirit was inspecting it (rather than storing it) after Burk signed it?
I mean, Burk's demonstrated super-strength a number of times, e.g. when throwing Pablo across the moat to the Mage Baron's castle or with how heavy his backpack was to the Aristocrat, so he's not just a normal guy + anti-magic. Maybe signing that contract somehow suppressed a portion of his strength?

Because Espers tend to skew squishy and unathletic even when they have powers, I'm guessing. It's probably not enough to make for a fair fight normally, but if someone turns off your powers, playing dirty back is fair.
Also, his job involves a lot of walking and running around anyways. Working out can't hurt, since it's not like he can skip leg day. (Probably. I don't remember seeing him use any flight tricks.)
