Well, the execs already tried to kill him like twice before - I think he's more referring to the sheer level of forces they're willing to throw at him. You'd think that they would try to limit the amount of outsiders in the city sniffing around and possibly accidentally stumbling on their conspiracy...

This is less a matter of being a prick and more a matter of being willing to take such extreme measures that could so easily backfire. This is like if a mayor called in the National Guard to cover up embezzlement.

I think he was just expecting them to keep up appearances while trying to assassinate them instead of just throwing an army at them.
He didn't think that he cornered them so much that they were 100% screwed so they chose to blow it all to hell. This might make them 99% screwed but they still have a chance to weasel out of this if they shut him up.
