@ghoul I believe there have been references in the comic to burning/otherwise disposing of magic users' corpses to prevent ghoul formation? There's certainly *some* way to prevent ghoulification when it's not being fast-tracked like Infinite's, or ghouls would be much, much more common.
That said, for all we know some nightmare could stick around long enough after her death to hide her away somewhere and let her ghoulify. Who knows how much of the Justopean public even knows how ghouls are created, but nightmares can know a lot more than Chernyl herself.

Magic users have access to Spirit this gives them this universe's version of Magic in all it's forms we've seen so far. Espers have no Spirit of their own to utilize.
Having a Mage-Esper Hybrid seems mutually exclusive in this universe. Esper abilities form when Magic literally traumatizes the body and mind into no longer housing Spirit, and as a defensive measurement the victim (rarely) develops the ability to subvert Spirit freely. Since they lack their own they aren't bogged down by the same limitations Mages have. They don't seem to be different branches so much as opposite ends of a stick.
