This whole scene is looking increasingly pixelated. If Shalhia isn't halucinating or otherwise dubiously accurate, the black water and black crystal is deepening its effects rapidly.
Given that we know at least one terrifying thing brings/follows said static, Shalhia might be on a time limit here.
Also, token 'oh no, Maria.' I definitely liked her more this chapter than previously - but no way was she getting out of this intact. Still, it was probably the kindest death she could get at this point.
Assuming she's permadead. No way this is a vision by now, but - we already know respawns can happen - and ghouls overwriting the consciousness might not be how the black water wraith functions. If she gets rez'd herself-but-wrong by whatever got Heusten,... Well, she'd still not deserve better.

I think it's just a matter of leverage, not supernatural durability. Bindy was smashed with a weapon, but Maria's head appears to have been smashed with a weapon *against a wall* since this catwalk at the lower levels is narrower than a roughly square room higher up.
Sprinkle in natural variance and just a touch of plot armor (Bindy's a *likeable* side character), and presto.
