Alfen chooses diplomacy first I see. Smart of him to question the "just following orders" narrative that seems to be prevalent among heroes, too. They seem to put way much more faith than they should to it and it's reasonable to assume that it's what they've been told only to follow questionable orders without question, not because people like Dolt wouldn't throw them under the bus as soon as things start getting real.

The amount of work that has been put into making Nightshade subtly creepy is admirable.
He has been given a subtly forward leaning posture. His face is detailed to a degree where its hard to still call this pixel art.
He got pink/red eyes. A weird smile.
And at the same time he is mostly behaving like a reasonable adult. Trying to calmly talk things out.

Ah, he's trying to talk him into it before having to resort to threats, huh

I wonder how many heroes have messed up "just following orders" and pissed off someone in the top who decides to deal with them in an accident.
Also Nightshade isn't smiling I find that mildly worrying.

I'm glad Nightshade here is trying to deescalate things carefully rather then jump in guns blazing, one reason why I like him quite a lot, and his reasoning is very solid, or as concrete reasons as he could give to a person like Skystroke.
That said, that guy is headstrong, not sure if he's going to back down quietly without a fight.

I kinda fear that Skystroke is too invested in avenging his cojones to listen to reason at the moment.

Well...
According to the newscast from Tobi's story, Sky-Stroke not only is still alive but also gets promoted after this, so when he talks about just following orders he is not completely wrong.

One thing I'm wondering is, can the excuse of "just following orders" really hold up when these heroes know that their contracts has been burnt to ashes and they're no longer contractually bond, meaning they might not even get paid at the end of the day?

Nightshade with the facts and pragmatism.
