My money was not on "gate to the spirit world," and given Tobi's homeland of Rauel, I'm guessing that that hypothesis is both true and a little oversimplified.

I might be like 1k pages late but:
It makes some sort of sense for magic to be called spirit and the source of it being the spirit world, with magic starting to be common after some gates to said spirit world were open.

Theo learned more about Mr Clockmaker than the other way round. The knowledge about the temples is apparently top secret, and not even an organization like Red Mind knows anything about it.

The Spirit World… we’ve seen some foreshadowing of another world existing, but it’s interesting to see who knows about such a thing in-comic.

Well I already suspected that Tobi’s people had a deeper link to magic since ghouls seemed to be her kin but if her homeland is known as the spirt world… Well that changes things. Also wow it took almost 10 years to sort of revist the topic of Tobi’s homeland and it took the additional of a fourth storyline further bloating the comic. Really not sure how to feel about the addition of Held.
