I forgot when I made my non-joke joke to say that he actually has it backwards. Meritocracy doesn't guarantee any sort of reward for the best, just that the best suited to their work get put there. Sure, they may involve proportionate rewards, but it's not a guarantee by any means. I hope he's not lost in his own dreams.
