Oh, that's new, right? We haven't seen spirit bonding before I think.
This whole talk of spirits reminds me of dragon age.
One reason I find this world here more compelling is because of the time periods chosen for the stories. The world hasn't had time to fully adjust to magic and the reactions feel so natural: first a violent attempt to purge, then most world states found their own balance without necessarily maximizing efficiency and finally we have an attempt by the empire to form an army and control it completely. Almost industrialize it. Makes the world feel alive and not static at all.
It's not just a problem with dragon age but with most fantasy settings. Magic is established and the world has already found its balance even if it sometimes makes no sense.
I don't really mind those worlds even though I'm calling it a problem, but I really like that this story has a different approach to its world building.

This is pretty major.
Its hard to precisely decide what it means.
But it seems to hint spirit magic is natural to humans. And special powers are then gained by bonding a spirit.

Since in the other chapters we only see intelligent spirits I wonder if spirits grew/evolved with time or if there's still the non intelligent ones about.
