The powers he got probably are really powerful... if used effectively. The heroes who usually wield them have had them long enough to come up with all kinds of clever things to do with them. Morty here is using them in the most basic way possible. Access to the best tool in the world means nothing if you can't use it effectively.

Called it. He really does have all the powers, but none of the experience to use them effectively. Just like with the contracts, he doesn't live up to the potential he would otherwise have and that's why he can't stand up to Burk.

He seems to have moved to the left somewhat in the third panel, relative to the table, before the recoil from the punch sends him right back. Also it wouldn't make much sense for Burk to swap sides if Morty was staying still.

So I think he did try to run for it. Didn't work well, but the thought was there.

Honestly that's become my take on Burk.
He's exactly as he presents himself. He's Burk! Not a spirit user, a ghoul, a player, an esper or any of the other 'classes', I think his class is Burk! A complete irregular in this world from what we've seen, and.. maybe thats just it, no hidden bells or whistles.
He's this odd exception to the regular rules of the world.

@Paintr I was figuring that Evillw was lying for effect or wrong from the beginning, nothing Burk does seems to line up with esper powers. We already know that "normal" people can fight magic with the Royal Guard, my assumption is that he is like them but a more natural talent rather than trained from birth or if he was trained from birth it was more effective than theirs as he can punch through spirit shielding without the gold lining in his clothes that they use. Since he seems to have some sort of connection to both Heroland Corp and the criminal syndicate that the pirate lady was a part of. It's possible he's from som collaboration between the two, to "improve the product" of the Empire's methods. And the deal went south as neither side is trustworthy.

We also know the Paladin has magic counters as well and she isn't an esper. The eyes thing isn't specifically an esper ability if I understood correctly.

Paladin is an esper. The sight is specifically an esper ability.

But you are right about the rest. Being an esper isn't the only way to get around magic.

I do not believe Burk can see magic directly the way espers can, but the "mini-burks" might be able. They could predict Skystroke's attack with no line of sight, after all.

Yeah, "all of the powers" really isn't working for him. Combining powers can go either way. If you have, say, "set people on fire" and "hold people still", then if you can use them at the same time, you can turn that into "set people on fire and they can't do anything about that", but if you can only do one at a time, then you would have been better off with the powers split between two people.

On the other hand, if you have a "half all damage", "double all resilience", "regenerate from just a head", "heal all minor damage", and "regenerate from just a pinky toe" situation, then you are much tougher than the sum of those powers. Combining can work amazingly!

If he were smart about this, then he would have checked over every power as he got it for passive power applications and gotten to adding them all together, but he seems to just think that "all of the powers" makes him unbeatable, without ever actually going over the theory of how that would work.

Burk has Burk Senses. (I forget what page he mentioned them. Sometime in the lighthouse.)

@Melany Is she? She uses a bunch of biological powers to fight magic and hasn't done any of the otherwise magical disruption that Eville and Noah do. I'll need to go back and reread when she talks about her eyes.

The main reason Burk is more of a mystery than a lot of characters is that he doesn't have the compulsion to tell everyone how his abilities work, but he's got a number of abilities that are esper-like.

Way back on pages 669 Burk apparently neutralized the Aristocrat's destiny punch. He then explained on 670 that he's immune to telegraphed attacks. On 673 he demonstrates that he can predict powers. On 674 he also demonstrates some sort of analytic ability. Against Ariara he was showing an ability to hurt her through spirit shielding. I don't really recall him demonstrating any other particular powers, though he's used all of them again. However, he does seem to have some physical powers (such as the ability to safely fall from the sky) that aren't esper.

On the other hand maybe he is an Esper.
But even if he is, you don't get that buff just walking around negating magic. Or for that matter he's carrying around those funky balls too. One's gold but we don't even know what the others are.
