@ charter. Bah I think you're right, the JSP aren't really morons per se, they're just really out of their element and not used to working with others that aren't JSP. They can't lash out at the military members present, but the Veda Project members have no official status, so they're taking the brunt here. They probably aren't the best and brightest of the JSP, their only job here was to monitor the Malhart deal and activate the fail safe if it ever went south. So they aren't complete morons. They are infact adequate. But as I've said before, adequate is all they are, and this is not a situation where that is going to be nearly enough.

Turns out you can accomplish a lot when your authoritarian state gives you carte blanche to exercise whatever violence you wish, even over other branches of said state.

I mean, Nail is pretty much capable of taking them down, and they are basically a threat to them in more than one way... And Nail is a sociopath so... Let's get this over with...

My read is the JSP is intrigue-focused, and from that perspective they have a captured enemy soldier they’re pumping for intelligence, and they’re dancing to his tune in enemy territory they know very little about, on the say-so of people they don’t trust, more or less.
Their solution is the bomb, casualties will suck but on the flipside, there’s no better option.
All these shenanigans do is increase the odds that even the big bomb fails and the magic hits ALL of the Empire.

Now giving face/getting to impose their own demands does help them calm down, at least by attempting to buck the script assuming an enemy plot, but unfortunately right now they’ve got to dance to someone else’s tune, which is unfortunately the sort of thing they’re supposed to avoid doing, because doing what your foe wants you to do is how you lose…

Adding to my previous statement. ( it should say "Nah" not "Bah" by the way) I feel as if something's changed with this guy. He was fine with the magic users a few chapters ago, even impressed with Noah's percieved utility and fire power. Now he's much more antagonistic with them. I'm wondering if there's more to it than just Number 1 not being used to having his authority questioned or having to listen to experts.

That's a pretty interesting interpretation. We the audience know just how much they're messing things up. But they don't, and in fact all they don't (and can't) know is a big part of the issue.

I wonder when Nail turns into "I'm your worst nightmare" mode. He's very patient.

Given the dramatic behaviour shift, I am 77% confident that #1 is utterly terrified of these new tall things for whatever reason. They triggered his fear response somehow and he’s taking it out on the team.
