Spirit Recoil.

Yay it finally has a name aside from "OH GOD GAZZ PLEASE STOP YOU'RE DYING"!

Sweet.

22579: Alcemon - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 2:46 AM

The Aristocrat also had this even before Gazz (?)

Also, hype "fight"

22580: someone - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 2:48 AM

I'm still going to be calling it "oh god goldman keep it up you're dying"

22581: Tor - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 3:51 AM

I think the Aristocrat was a bit better at handling the spirit recoil, i dont recall seeing him bleed from it.

Else, seems Silverman has a decent scientifical understanding of spirit techniques.

22582: Some guy - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 4:02 AM

@Tor

Goldman probably just got worse recoil. I doubt he uses that tech often.

22583: Deracanos - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 4:10 AM

I thought Gazz had a power that let him do that.

22584: Woodledude - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 4:31 AM

I know everyone's super hyped about the fight, and I am too, but I noticed in the fourth panel that Wurm's hand is in the same position it was in in the first panel. I can almost imagine him reeling in plaintive shock, stunned into morose silence by his boss's words.

Also, I think this qualifies as pretty exciting, because we now know that Burk's speed is *probably* totally natural. We don't understand masking enough to say for 100% certain, but Goldman's ability seems like it would be pretty thorough, and I must presume he would have had an opportunity to test it on all kinds of spirit fighters. Against mask specialists? We have no idea, but surely? Of course, someone masking possibly can't normally do what Burk did, which tells us a lot...

And makes me think Burk really is straight up spiritless. And just very, very strong and athletic. Perhaps we'll even get an explanation at some point along the lines of Burk and his kin using whatever energy that would normally go towards controlling and harnessing spirit, to just beef up, instead.

Or maybe Burk is just Burk, and he's gonna keep Burkin' along with no man able to stop him, save Pablo, sometimes.

I love how this has turned into a tornament arc of a shonen anime, but the ppl narrating are gangsters.

22587: Chris E. - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 4:56 AM

Whatever you might think about Goldman, you can't deny that he has a good exposition team.
It is interesting to note that Silverman is the one who knows the most about Goldman's power's limitations, and also the one who Goldman stopped gambling with.
But presumably there must be another aspect to Goldman's power involved in the gambling, unless his opponents have kept using spirit to play their cards or something?

22588: Lord Incaros - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 6:07 AM

Wow. So Burk is pretty much the WORST person Goldman could be fighting. Goldman's power depends on reading spirit and Burk has none, but can STILL go toe to toe with magic users who DON'T depend on that and still win. If not for the fact that Burk isn't likely to throw a bunch Goldman likely would have already been sent flying.

22589: Obligatory Grammar Nazi - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 6:18 AM

whose, not who's in the last panel.

who's: contraction of who+is
whose: possessive form of who

22590: Storm - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 9:44 AM

Even with the spirit-recoil damage, that emergency-teleport is a pretty powerful ability!

If he's taking spirit-recoil damage like Gazz, then does that suggest his power's like Gazz's (and the other kids' from Noah's arc)?

And.. maybe he's a Free-Magic user? (www.neorice.com/hoh_noah_602) His range of powers seems to exclude Pandemonium, and his abilities seem too spell-like to be "magic potential".. unless it's really highly developed magic-potential?

22591: Violet - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 10:52 AM

You know things are getting intense when Silverman speaks.

22592: GreenDread - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 12:38 PM

@Storm

Yeah, I think it is very, very highly high magic potential, but not in every aspect.

22593: Tor - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 1:02 PM

Or alternatively Goldman is just that good at reading people when gambling with them? Silverman got a perfect pokerface, so he stopped playing with Silver because he hates losing.

But yeah by the sound of it Burk is like the Royal Guard. A person trained to an inhuman level (honestly find that silly but whatever).

But yes his power is like Gazz's and the other magic kids. Its still hard to say if he is potential, free magic, or pandemonium. All is possible.

22594: A Loquacious Theorizer - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 2:48 PM

both Wurm and Goldman call it a technique, which means it can’t be pure Pandemonium.
that means he’s either using Spirit Manipulation or Free magic, and I find it more likely to call Spirit Manipulation a technique, and Free Magic a spell.
in the Magic Academy chapter, we saw that Spirit Potential and Pandemonium learn Spirit Manipulation, but it was not conclusively stated whether Free Magic users can learn Spirit Manipulation.
if they could do it, they’d have motivation to, as Spirit Manipulation is much more efficient than Free Magic.

22595: Bruudwin - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 3:01 PM

Yu Yu Hakusho! :D

@Lord Incaros
what do ye mean? Berk has a whole lotta spirit! :P

22596: Sench - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 4:42 PM

The real question is, how is Burk so fast when he clearly skips leg day?

22597: Darius Drake - Tuesday, July 7 2020 - 9:58 PM

@A Loquacious Theorizer - Honestly, I would suspect it's one of the "three bottom techniques" from page 690, Graphs, but Spirit Manipulation so far seems to amplify the natural, and I don't consider seeing a clearly specified % over someone's head to be overly natural.

The 7 Techniques we know can be considered to be "Release Spirit", "Restrain Spirit", "Focus Spirit", "Spirit Armour", "Expand Spirit", "Hide Spirit" and "Perceive Spirit". The other techniques we can clearly see are likely "Project Spirit", "Spirit Weapon" and "Healing Spirit".

So what do all these words mean, at the end of it all? Goldman's probably a Free Magic User. Also, we haven't seen him use Spirit Magic, and when he was checking other's Spirit Magic Results, we didn't see any figure floating over his own head, despite there being room. It could just be that he was the one using the Magical Technique, but it also could be that he doesn't have any Spirit to use.

Plot Twist: Piper finds out she has a bondage fetish, specifically with strangely colored rope.

22602: noname - Wednesday, July 8 2020 - 3:32 AM

Calling it now: Silverman is actually even better/stronger than Goldman, and Goldman knows this. However, they are both just plain fine with keeping a low profile about this fact: Goldman because he likes being as highly regarded as gold, and Silverman because he knows the merits in his true mettle being underestimated.

22605: Sean - Wednesday, July 8 2020 - 1:45 PM

So is Goldman a Pandemonium user with a predict ability that knows spirit and gave all his techs fun names or a free magic user?

I'm kind of leaning towards former than latter with his techs being combinations or creative uses of the spirit techniques.
