Hypothesis.

Hey interesting! A couple of readers had the exact same hypothesis.

You earn a "Think like a dentist" token! Good job.

Congrats to the readers for that prize ! We wish them a fruitful career in dentistry !

... and let us flee far, far from them !

Sir, I think we need another dose of anesthesia.

It took me a few days for it to click but I probably could have been on the "maybe possibly doesn't get killed by the dentist" list. I had several teeth removed a while back as a result of not having been to a dentist for a good 20 years just about. Small problems built into big ones entirely out of my control.

So, I was in for the removal on one side. It had to be done one at a time for whatever reason they gave me. So, I was administered some injection of some kind to numb the pain. Except, something went wrong. Instead of having feeling leave my face, I instead felt an excruciating burning. it felt like something was inside there trying to tear its way out. It burned really bad. And I sat there and put up with it, for the entire time I was waiting for them (there's a period where they leave you there for the numbness to take full effect) and for the entire duration of the procedure. Then I told them afterwards, I think. My eyes were tearing up, I think, but I didn't move or scream or anything. Hook me up with the nightmare doc. I'll help him.

While I'm here, I want to drop the reason why I thought being a "good patient" could mean survival. As we've seen currently and later (spoilers!) with this arc, the dentist doesn't seem to appreciate bad patients. I figure he goes berserk if people get fidgety or make a bunch of noise. I thought someone may still potentially get maimed by the dentist, but if you managed to hold it together til he was finished, you'd survive instead of having your head cleaned completely away.

New readers, I'm not about to tell you what happened. Read the comic damnit.
